  BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE

NLL runs between the mainland portion of Gyeonggi-do province that had been part of Hwanghae before 1945, and the adjacent offshore islands, including Yeonpyeong Island and Baengnyeong Island. Because of the conditions of the armistice, the mainland portion reverted to North Korean control, while the islands remained a part of South Korea despite their close proximity.

The line extends into the sea from the Military Demarcation Line (MDL), and consists of straight line segments between 12 approximate channel midpoints, extended in an arc to prevent egress between both sides. On its western end the line extends out along the 38th parallel to the median line between Korea and China.

Yeonmijeong of Ganghwado Island
Yeonmijeong Pavilion is Incheon's Tangible Cultural Asset No. 24 (designated on March 1, 1995).
While the exact date of construction is unknown, the pavilion was greatly damaged and then rebuilt afterwards due to the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, the Byeongja Chinese Invasion in 1636, and the Korean War on June 25, 1950.
The name Yeonmi comes from the swallow tail-shape of Imjingang River and Yeomhagang River ('yeon' means swallow and ‘mi’ means a tail). As the pavilion stands on top of Wolgotdondae, visitors can see Paju-si, Gimpo-si, Gaepung-gun in Hwanghae-do (North Korea) at a glance.
3
Civilian Access control Line (ID Check)
* Please bring your passport.
4
Coastal Boundary Barrier
NLL means the Northern Limit Line, a maritime demarcation line in the Yellow Sea between North Korea (DPRK) on the north, and South Korea (ROK) on the south. It is an extension of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in the Yellow Sea.

This line of military control acts as the de facto maritime boundary between North and South Korea. Although North Korea denies NLL, the South Korean navies have protected the NLL with all its military efforts. As North Korea does not recognise the line, its fishing boats work close to or over the limit line, escorted by North Korean naval boats. So South Korean naval ships regularly patrol the area around the NLL.
5
Ganghwa Peace Observatory
Ganghwado Island, situated along the Hwanghae Sea, is the closest island to North Korea, with the Hangang River running between them. Positioned on the northernmost mountain of the island, it provides clear views of North Korea. Visitors can use telescopes to observe North Korea directly and explore exhibitions related to the country. Remember to carry identification such as a passport or certificate of alien registration when visiting.

Ganghwa Marine Park (A tour of the battle ship)
Ganghwa Marine Park is a unique tourist destination located in Ganghwa Island, Incheon. It is a park that repurposes the retired naval ship Masan, which was commissioned in 1985 and served in the Navy for 34 years before retiring in 2019. Visitors can explore the interior of the warship and experience various facilities such as the dining hall, kitchen, and barbershop, which were used by sailors during their service. The park is especially intriguing for visitors interested in military experiences, as it displays naval weapons such as naval guns, torpedoes, and missiles.
8
Dolmen Site (UNESCO Heritages Sites)
Dolmen in Bugeun-ri is a dolmen site in Ganghwa that was designated as a Historic Site for its historical value representing the funeral customs of the Bronze Age. The main stone used to create the tomb is 710 centimeters long, 550 centimeters wide, and 260 centimeters high. The dolmen is an example of the northern dolmen customs, serving as a subject of further research in the field of ancient history. The Dolmen in Bugeun-ri is also registered as a UNESCO World Heritage along with other significant dolmen sites.
