  BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE

On July 27, 1953, an armistice agreement was signed to cease fire in the Korean War and establish a de facto military demarcation line along the 38th parallel, which resulted in the complete division of a once united nation. A war buffer zone was created along this demarcation line, a strip of land known as the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).

The DMZ has always been a topic of interest among travelers to Korea for its historical significance, the Korean War aftermath that still affects the two countries even to this day. Although the DMZ is a heavily military-controlled border area, certain regions around the DMZ are made accessible to civilians as a way to remember the sacrifice and loss from the Korean War, appreciate the nature reserve left untouched for decades, and hope for a peaceful reunification. If you’re interested in visiting the DMZ yourself, read on to see answers to the most frequently asked DMZ-related questions.

It is estimated that nearly 30,000 personnel can move through the tunnel every hour. Visitors to the 3rd Tunnel must reserve the tour in advance. The tour starts from the Imjingak Pavilion. Well-Guided DMZ Tour
Review for : DMZ Tour with North Korean Defector
This was an excellent tour! We visited several key sites in the DMZ, including some great vantage points to look into North Korea. Going down into the North Korean attack tunnel, 60m underground, was an unforgettable experience—though the climb back up takes some effort! Our guide, Mimi, was fantastic. She spoke excellent English and shared tons of information in a really engaging way. There’s also plenty of interesting info at the sites themselves. The highlight was definitely meeting the North Korean defector. She joined us on the bus for over an hour, answering any questions we had. Hearing about her escape as a young girl, her life in North Korea, and her journey to South Korea was absolutely fascinating.Highly recommend this tour—especially for that unique interaction and the incredible guide!

Review for : DMZ Tour with North Korean Defector
Everything went really smoothly! We got picked up early from our hotel before gathering the rest of the group. Our guide, Jung, was super kind and shared detailed historical insights about the conflict between North and South Korea throughout the tour. The interview with the North Korean defector was also really interesting. Definitely recommend this tour!

We had an amazing time on the tour with Eunice! Getting the chance to meet and talk to a North Korean defector was an incredible experience. Seeing views of North Korea in person felt surreal. The tour was perfect—we learned so much and had a great time. If you’re in Seoul, definitely make time for this!

Review for : DMZ Tour with North Korean Defector
We had an amazing day with Jung! Getting the chance to ask questions to a North Korean defector was such an honor and made the experience truly unforgettable. Visiting the DMZ is something not many people get to do, and we’re so glad we did—it was both enjoyable and incredibly educational. Highly recommend!

Fascinating & Insightful Tour
Review for : DMZ Tour with North Korean Defector
A really interesting trip—highly recommend! Our guide, Jung, shared tons of great information, and the interview with the North Korean defector (a young woman) was incredibly insightful. The highlights were definitely the interview, the 3rd Tunnel (though it’s a tough underground slope—not ideal if you’re claustrophobic or not in good shape), and the observation tower. Seeing into North Korea and watching actual North Korean farmers go about their daily lives was a really emotional moment.Overall, an unforgettable experience!
